WALLIS ANNENBERG WILDLIFE CROSSING

The National Park Service researched transportation infrastructure’s effect on wildlife habitat. The 101 Freeway creates a barrier that isolates animal populations within the Santa Monica Mountains. The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing was developed to restore habitat connectivity across the ten-lane freeway and an adjacent access road at a location where protected lands exist on both sides of the corridor. Images of mountain lions as potential crossers adorn the project website promoting the completion of the crossing. Our firm provided engineering services related to temporary earth shoring design at the base of the site during early construction phases that allowed the bridge and abutments to be constructed ahead of the southerly earthwork. Our services were performed for the General Contractor, C.A. Rasmussen, and the shoring was installed by Malcolm Drilling. The shoring design used Caltrans available beam supply and allowed height to be added to the top of the shoring as grading operations backfilled a slope up to the abutment level.
