Underpinning

Underpinning section

Underpinning is generally required when the excavation is up against another building that is heavy and/or settlement sensitive. This is more costly than shoring but will result in less settlement of the adjacent foundations. Drilled piles or hand-dug piers are placed under the existing foundation to support the existing building during excavation.
